tunnel crawlers 1997

I took these portraits while I was the Bathroom Lounge DJ in New York's infamous TUNNEL, an expansive nightclub with at least a dozen various rooms, each with unique decor and music catering to different tastes.

The Bathroom Lounge was created as a response to an 80's trend for crowds to hang out in the bathroom to chill and most often to do drugs. It is complete with a full service bar, an independent sound system, and a lounge area with sofas, flanked on either side by the gender specific facilities.

My DJ booth was on the corner of the hallway leading from the club's main mega dancefloor to the WC. Needless to say, everyone had to pass by my booth at some point or another. The door had an upper section that could be opened separately, so I seized the opportunity to photograph people in between mixes. I snapped most of these portraits between the hours of 3 and 5 am on Sunday mornings during my 6 week engagement.

I particularly enjoy the subject(s) posing in combination with the random activities in the background. And although some of the images seem a little out-of-focus, it was through no fault of my own, but mainly due to the blurry state of the subject.
